the grain
Join us for “The Grain” on Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. This contemporary worship time will have a “rock-style” edge with elements of contemplation, prayer stations, and artistic expression. A breakdown of the traditional leader / congregational roles will be encouraged with an open mike for testimonies and readings. Some of the artwork created and bread baked during our Saturday morning workshops be offered during this time. The evening will close as we share in the communion meal together.
send us your poems
poetry collection 2010
Help us mark the beginning of the second 100 years as a congregation. We’d like to invite the congregation’s poets to submit their work for consideration for inclusion in a new Grantham Church collection of poems. To save money, (and trees) we will publish these works of poetry online, as a PDF file available so you can download and print your own copy of the booklet. Poems submitted may be used in future worship services, or for worship arts events.

To submit your poems for consideration in this new publication, please send your word processing-type documents to Karen Durbin: kdurbin@granthamchurch.org

THIS IS MY STORY, THIS IS MY SONG:
Exploring the Art of Storytelling

Saturday and Sunday, April 17-18

We love to hear stories, and we love to tell stories. In the telling and in the listening we are part of each other’s stories. Created in God’s image, we share the epic stories of the Bible, but we also often share our own faith journeys in the church. The arts are integral to our storytelling — our worship is filled with stories.
One of the ways we experience God in art is very subtle and individual. For the artist, there’s a time for just plain storytelling, knowing that sharing stories itself is an incarnational activity. If we’re looking for God in the stories, art, and music all around us, we’ll find him. If we leave room in our stories for God to speak, He does! — and sometimes not in the way we intended at all.
This weekend we will celebrate the diverse ways we incorporate the arts to enliven storytelling in the faith community.

Saturday Workshops: You are invited to participate in several workshops on Saturday as we explore storytelling through photography, visual art, hand bells, journaling, creative writing, chamber music, dance, and bread-baking. Stay all day and join us for a marvelous lunch with Art and Donna Bert. You are encouraged to bring along your favorite piece of worship music and the story behind your selection, and we will enjoy this time together. No pressure! You may choose to bring a CD, sheet music, your hymnal, your instrument, and voice – or just come to listen to what others have to share.

The Grain: On Saturday evening, we will again offer an experiential worship time which we have entitled “The Grain.” This worship experience is planned with congregational participation in mind through singing, prayer stations, open mic for readings and testimonies, painting, quiet space for prayer and reflection, and sharing together in communion. (We are planning to use the bread from our bread-baking workshop as well as writing that may emerge in the writing workshop.)

Gallery: Sunday evening will include a reception for our community show: "A Picture is Worth ...". You know what it's like: you admire someone's vacation snapshot, and they smile and say, "There's a great story behind that shot." Sometimes the picture tells the whole story, and sometimes it only hints at it. We will be displaying a gallery full of your best photographs this year as our community show. The focus this time is exploring how images can tell a story.

We hope you'll share the photographs that you've taken on a family vacation trip, a bird-watching venture, cross-cultural experience, or wherever. We want to encourage those in our church community who might not see yourself as an "artist," but you do enjoy taking photos, and would be willing to share some of your favorites with us. We'd like to print the stories that go along with your photos — if you'll allow us — but don't let that scare you away from this show!

Choirs Concert: We will culminate our weekend on Sunday evening with a concert of worship, “We are Risen with Christ.” Join us as we praise God together by proclaiming our shared story of the resurrection of Jesus. Musical selections will be offered by the Chancel Choir, Grantham Brass, Grantham Ringers, and Kingdom Singers. The Grantham Ringers will feature “Be Still My Soul” in memory of Harold Davis. This was Harold’s favorite hymn and we offer this as a thank you to the Davis family for their memorial gift that enabled us to buy a 4th octave of hand bells.

We are confident that you will not want to miss one moment of this weekend. A brochure is coming soon to give more information about the workshops, times and how to sign-up. These are our stories and our song! Let’s explore and learn together.
