Scandalous Grace

Sermon Title: Scandalous Grace
Scripture Reading: Romans 2:4; 6:1-4; Ephesians 2:1-10; 3:1-12; Galatians 6:14-15

Nobody understood grace better than the Apostle Paul. He was a strict, law-abiding Pharisee who persecuted Christians before he met Jesus on the road to Damascus. But once he encountered the risen Jesus, Paul was changed and then given a revelation of how God wanted to pour out his grace on the Gentiles. And what's even more shocking, God wanted to use Paul to extend this grace to everyone. In Scandalous Grace, Pastor David shares how Christ calls the church to accept people where they are and invite them to encounter the transforming power of God's love.

Peacemakers (4 of 4)

Guest Speaker: Shane Claiborne
Sermon Series:
Peacemakers: Living Peacefully in an Age of Outrage
Sermon Title: Blessed are the Peacemakers
Scripture Reading: Luke 10:25-37

Jesus told a parable of a despised Samaritan who helped a person that had been beaten and left for dead on the road to Jericho. Jesus shared this story in response to the question: “Who is my neighbor?” It’s a powerful story that seeks to crack the stereotypes and prejudices that perpetuate an “us vs. them” mentality. As Shane Claiborne points out, we should be ready to do what the “good” Samaritan did, but we should also be willing to rethink the whole road to Jericho. Listen as Shane invites us to consider how Jesus calls his disciples to reimagine what it looks like to be peacemakers.

Resolve to Love

Sermon Title: Resolve to Love
Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:38-47

Resolve to Love (12-30-18).jpg

Jesus commands us to love our neighbors and our enemies. It is one of the most challenging things we do as followers of Jesus, but it can also be the most distinctive way to be the church in our society today. If we’re going to live into that calling we need to set aside the false binary choices that separate what we like from what we don’t like and avoid the trap of loving only those we first like. In Resolve to Love, Pastor Dan Bisbee says we should start with forgiveness and be the “angled mirrors” of God’s divine love to everyone.

In the first century, the Roman empire ruled the world. And the virgin Mary believed that the annunciation by the angel Gabriel meant that everything was about to change, for the God of love was fulfilling his covenant promises through Jesus. In Signs of Love (4 of 4), Pastor David invites us to follow the example of Mary so that we might be conduits of God's love and grace to a world longing for liberation.

Denouncing Judge Dredd.png

Judge Dredd is a fictional comic book character who enforces the law as judge, jury, and executioner in a dystopian future. Dredd says, "I AM THE LAW!" Unfortunately, if we're honest, we sometimes act this way toward our neighbors. But Jesus taught us not to judge people. Listen as Pastor David shares how judging others reveals our own emptiness, and how we are called to embrace an identity that engenders a deep love for our neighbor.
