Peacemakers (4 of 4)

Guest Speaker: Shane Claiborne
Sermon Series:
Peacemakers: Living Peacefully in an Age of Outrage
Sermon Title: Blessed are the Peacemakers
Scripture Reading: Luke 10:25-37

Jesus told a parable of a despised Samaritan who helped a person that had been beaten and left for dead on the road to Jericho. Jesus shared this story in response to the question: “Who is my neighbor?” It’s a powerful story that seeks to crack the stereotypes and prejudices that perpetuate an “us vs. them” mentality. As Shane Claiborne points out, we should be ready to do what the “good” Samaritan did, but we should also be willing to rethink the whole road to Jericho. Listen as Shane invites us to consider how Jesus calls his disciples to reimagine what it looks like to be peacemakers.

Osheta Moore Interview

Osheta Moore (author & pastor) was invited to be a speaker in our Peacemakers series. When it didn’t look like we would be able to worship on Sunday due to a winter storm, Pastor David decided to sit down and have a conversation with Osheta in his office. While we were able to hear Osheta the next day, we believe you will find this dialogue encouraging and helpful in guiding you to be a peacemaker online. Enjoy the podcast!

Peacemakers (2 of 4)

Guest Speaker: Dave Brubaker
Sermon Title: Dealing with Difference in the Body of Christ
Scripture Reading: Acts 15:1-35

Every church will have disagreements. How do we deal with difference in the Body of Christ? Acts 15 gives us four helpful guidelines for doing so. First, move towards disagreement rather than away from it. Second, give plenty of time to hear each other’s stories. Third, consult with each other and with Scripture before deciding. Finally, make a decision that respects the dignity of all involved as children of God. Listen as Dave Brubaker (EMU) shares his insights based on years of experience helping churches and organizations find peace amid conflicts.

Peacemakers: Living Peacefully in an Age of Outrage

Peace & Social Justice Series | January 2019

We are living in tumultuous times in America. From political campaigns to nightly news, from social media to the dinner table, we are experiencing great division, strife, and polarization in our culture. And unfortunately, the church is often lured in to the fear-mongering, name-calling, and violent rhetoric that is typical of those who haven’t encountered the good news or who don’t know the love and grace of Christ. We can do better and we must, for Jesus calls his followers to be peacemakers and ministers of reconciliation. But is that even possible? And if so, what does it look like for disciples to disarm and deescalate the hostile world around us by pursuing peace? We hope you’ll join us for our 2019 Peace & Social Justice series where we will turn our attention to how we can follow Jesus and live peacefully in an age of outrage.

Sermon Title: Beyond Sticks & Stones: The Power of Words
Scripture Reading: Proverbs 12:18, 15:4, 18:21; Matthew 15:11; James 3:1-10, 18

It's a common saying: "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me." But this couldn't be further from the truth! The Bible teaches us that our words have great power. Our speech can make peace or lead to war. Our words can be a healing balm or a hatchet to a person’s soul. In Beyond Sticks & Stones: The Power of Words, Pastor David challenges us to tame our tongue by letting God deal with our heart, so that we might bless all those made in his image.
