Sermon Series: Roots: Exploring the Core Values of the Brethren in Christ
Sermon Title: Relying on God
Scripture Reading: Psalm 59:16-17; John 14:15-17; 15:5 1 John 4:15-16; Eph 3:16-21

Our final value is written in the form of a confession. We confess that in order to follow Jesus and faithfully keep our core convictions and values, we need to rely upon the strength he provides through the Holy Spirit. How do we walk in the Spirit? How do we access a strength greater than ourselves? We believe it is through prayer that we receive divine power to live faithfully as his disciples.

In Relying on God (10 of 10), Pastor David concludes our series with a message on the power of the Holy Spirit and the necesity of prayer in the life of the disciple and the church.

Sermon Title: Living Simply (9 of 10)
Scripture Reading: Acts 2:42-47; Matthew 5:42; 6:19-21; 1 John 3:16-19

In the book of Acts we read that when people came to faith in Christ the impact was immediately seen in their individual behavior and communal practices. The early church was serious about discipleship and community. They were willing to throw off all that hindered their ability to love boldly, give generously, and serve one another joyfully.

In Living Simply (9 of 10), Pastor David helps us to see that simple living is about freeing ourselves up to give more for the sake of the Kingdom.

Sermon Series: Roots: Exploring the Core Values of the Brethren in Christ
Sermon Title: Pursuing Peace (8 of 10)
Scripture Reading: Leviticus 24:19-20; Matthew 5:38-45; Ephesians 5:1-2

Jesus taught us to love our enemies and showed us how to live non-violently in a violent world. When Jesus said, “You have heard it said… but I say to you” (Matt 5:43-45), he was calling his disciples to leave the old way and live in the new way of love. This new way is radical and appears foolish to the flesh, but through it we discover the wisdom and power of God.

In Pursuing Peace (8 of 10), guest speaker Greg Boyd (author, pastor & theologian) challenges us to live in love as Christ loved us and gave his life for us.

Sermon Title: Serving Compassionately (7 of 10)
Scripture Reading: Mark 10:42-45; Matthew 9:35-38; Philippians 2:5-8

Jesus didn’t come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. He said that the first must be last, and that the greatest must become a servant of all. We value serving others because Jesus looked on people with great compassion and met them at their point of need. What does that look like for us?

In Serving Compassionately (7 of 10), Pastor David shares how our love of Jesus ought to compel us to serve others in need.

Sermon Title: Witnessing to the World (6 of 10)
Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:13-16; 28-18-20; Luke 15:1-7

Jesus said he is the light of the world. He came proclaiming good news to the poor, sight for the blind, and freedom for the captives. With God’s authority, he told his disciples to let their light shine and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to obey his commands. How do we shine our light and engage our culture today with the gospel?

In Witnessing to the World (6 of 10), Pastor David challenges us to creatively navigate culture with a sense of urgency, and to be a faithful presence of Christ to the world around us.

Sermon Title: Belonging to the Community of Faith (5 of 10)
Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 13; Matthew 18:15-20; Ephesians 4:1-16

As followers of Jesus, relationships must come before everything else. Being a healthy church is hard work, but the Holy Spirit makes it possible in our love for one another. God wants to display his wisdom to the world by empowering us through his Spirit to be the holy people of God.

In Belonging to the Community of Faith (5 of 10), Pastor David calls us to be the church for a world that needs to see Christ.

Sermon Title: Following Jesus (4 of 10)
Scripture Reading: Matthew 7:13-14, 24-29; John 14:15; 1 John 1:6

When Jesus called people to follow him, he wasn’t telling them to ask him into their heart so they can go to heaven when they die. Jesus was inviting them to learn his teachings and imitate his living. That is what discipleship is all about. The Brethren in Christ believe we are to follow Jesus in radical obedience to his commands.

In Following Jesus (4 of 10), Pastor David addresses the narrow way of discipleship.

Sermon Title: Worshiping God (3 of 10)
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 6:1-8; Psalm 96:1-6; Revelation 4:1-11; 5:1-14

We were created to worship. Worship is our highest calling because it is eternal, and it will outlast all other practices and spiritual disciplines of the Christian life. The Brethren in Christ have always recognized the priority and the power of worship.

In Worshiping God (3 of 10), Pastor David presents us with a theology of worship and why Grantham Church is committed to doing convergent worship well.

Sermon Title: Believing the Bible (2 of 10)
Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 3:16-17; John 1:1-2; 2 Peter 1:16-21

The Brethren in Christ believe that the Bible is the sole authority for faith and practice. However, as Anabaptists, we believe the way to know its authority isn’t by giving the Bible over to “the experts” or to the individual, but by faithfully interpreting it together in community, and by interpreting it with the crucified Christ as the hermeneutical key.

In Believing the Bible (2 of 10), Pastor David shares how our view and interpretation of the Holy Scriptures can help the church navigate the challenges facing us today.

Sermon Title: Experiencing God’s Love & Grace (1 of 10)
Scripture Reading: Colossians 2:6-7; Ephesians 2:8-10; John 3:3

Experiencing the love and grace of God is the foundation for all that the Brethren in Christ (BIC) hold dear. Everything that we value begins and ends there. Our faith can’t simply be an exercise of the mind. It must also be about heart-change and life transformation that comes from knowing the living Christ.

In Experiencing God’s Love & Grace (1 of 10), Pastor David shares what it means to really know God and be changed.
