Sermon Title: The Cost of Discipleship
Scripture Reading: Luke 9:57-62; John 15:4, Psalm 16

Luke 9 marks a dramatic shift as Jesus’ ministry in Galilee comes to an end as he sets “his face toward Jerusalem.” In the wake of this dramatic shift, the gospel of Luke tells of three brief interactions between Jesus and his would-be followers. Jesus’ response to these anonymous followers is radical and concise—following Jesus requires absolute commitment and a willingness to leave behind all that society deems sacred. In The Cost of Discipleship, Pastor Kelly invites us to open our hearts to Jesus’ call to follow him. What do we need to let go of to follow more closely? Are we willing to follow Christ’s call? And what does Jesus promise in return to those who do choose to follow him?

Western individualism has seeped into the church today in many ways. One obvious example is how some folks believe they can follow Jesus without being actively involved in the church. And unfortunately, not only does their faith limp along, but the church suffers due to their lack of connection and commitment to the building up of the Body of Christ. In a message entitled, Why You Need the Local Church to Follow Jesus, Pastor David calls us to consider the divine purpose and power of the local church, followed by an invitation to prayerful discern how the Spirit is calling you to engage at Grantham Church.
