Sermon Title: Many Gifts, One Spirit
Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:1-26; Romans 12:3-8
Sermon Focus: The Holy Spirit distributes a rich variety of gifts throughout the Body of Christ. Rather than comparing ourselves with others or elevating certain gifts above the rest, we are invited to celebrate the Spirit's wisdom in equipping every believer differently. In the third message of our series, Pastor David surveys some of the gifts mentioned in the New Testament, shares what they look like in practice, and emphasizes that every gift is essential to the health and mission of the church.
Thank you for going deeper in conversation with your small group. Use the following questions to help guideyour small group discussion:
- Begin by reading 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 and Romans 12:3-8. What is your initial response to these two passages of Scripture? What is God saying to you?
- Paul reminds us that there are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit, and that every gift is given "for the common good." How does this challenge the way our culture tends to value certain abilities or people over others? Why is it important to remember that every spiritual gift comes from the same Holy Spirit?
- Take some time to go back and view the slides that capture the list of gifts that Paul mentions in 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 and Romans 12:3-8, which Pastor David categorized for us. Review the slide “Other Spiritual Gifts for Today” as well. Do you have any of these gifts? Has anyone ever helped you develop or ever affirmed those gifts in your journey? Allow each person to share about their gift(s).
- What about those in your small group? What gifts have you seen in each other, or what gifts might be worth exploring through prayer and practice? Remember, there can be an overlap with natural and spiritual gifts, but not always.
- Notice that Paul begins his teaching on spiritual gifts by calling believers to humility. Have you ever found yourself comparing your gifts—or lack of gifts—to someone else's? Why do you think this happens? What kinds of gifts might we be tempted to compare? How can we move from comparison and competition to gratitude and celebration for the different ways God has gifted his people?
- LIFE ON MISSION QUESTION – The purpose of every spiritual gift is to strengthen the church and participate in God's mission. What's one practical way you could use one of your gifts this week—at church, in your neighborhood, at work, or in your family—to build someone up and reflect the love of Christ?
Be sure to close your time in prayer for each other. Specifically pray for God to reveal the gifts of the Spirit through the people in your small group. Also, pray for anyone or anything else that has come up in your conversation together.
